The Weathering Depot

I have been weathering mainly HO Scale model trains since 2009 for fellow modelers and family. I specialize in freight cars, especially rust buckets. I do anything from light to heavy weathering using a variety of different mediums, sometimes three or four on a single car. I take care with models, therefore a model may take me a week plus. Please check out my work here on my page. My price varies as to how much weathering is requested. I will also for an extra labor and parts charge change out couplers and wheels. My fees and hours are on the "contact me" tab.

  • Another car joins the fleet….

Another car has joined the roster, this one purchased on eBay as I thought the weathering looked great and wanted to check out what process and material the owner used. This car is an Athearn Genesis series car. I’m going to paint and weather the underside and paint the wheels and this one will be… Continue reading

  • More work on the layout….

Coming soon from an outfit at http://www.Coastmans.com is a bag of realistic rusted scrap, that I’ll use for my scrapyard. Apparently this is actual scrap from the gentleman who runs the shop’s 3D printer. When it arrives Monday the 13th I’ll be changing up the scrapyard a bit to accommodate this more realistic scrap pile.… Continue reading

  • New locomotive joins the fleet…

To use with the B&O caboose, I recently purchased this Walther’s Proto B&O SW switcher on eBay, which is supposed to be already programmed with DCC and sound. As the layout isn’t wired yet, I’ve yet to test this guy, but hopefully it’s fine. I’ve lightly weathered this one , but a bit hard to… Continue reading

  • More cars to be weathered….!

The following cars I picked up at the train show recently, most of these from my main go to shop, Spring Creek Model Trains from Deshler, Nebraska. This is a great shop ran by great people with great prices and inventory! You’ll find them also at train shows all over the country. These cars will… Continue reading

  • Look who I ran into….!

While at the recent train show I visited the booth of The Colorado Model Railroad Museum, located in Greeley, Colorado. This museum is a must see if you’re ever in Colorado! Inside among other things railroad is a 5,000+ square foot model railroad plus the last wood side caboose used in Colorado. I myself have… Continue reading

  • New cars join the fleet…

Speaking of the recent Rocky Mountain Train Show here in Denver, I was fortunate enough to pick up a few nicely weathered cars from several dealers. These are shown below. The ex-St Lawrence Railroad boxcar is I think a nicely done car patched for ICG, while the gondolas came with nicely done scrap loads: Continue reading

  • I’ve been working on the railroad…..

Being tied up with a full time job hasn’t given me much time to post lately, but I have been able to complete little projects on the layout modules. I’ve worked on several things recently to hopefully enhance the prototype look of the layout. These small projects include the addition of “industrial dirt” by Arizona… Continue reading

  • Ohio or West Virginia?…..

After looking at the two modules, and deciding to keep the Tangent B&O caboose, I’m going to look for a B&O locomotive to run with it, as an interchange connection. Yes, the layout is only two modules and is mostly a display layout for my weathered models, but it will run and provide a bit… Continue reading

  • Latest project…..

My latest project is this Tangent B&O I-19 steel bay window caboose. Below is the photo by Tangent of how it looks right out of the box: I had this caboose on my eBay store but no takers , so I’ve decided to keep this one for an interchange with the B&O, (more on this… Continue reading

    More weathered hoppers! Continue reading

  • It’s hopper time…!

Here’s a short post showcasing my work on hoppers for friends and local modelers. Enjoy! Continue reading

  • Another weathered car joins the fleet….

In this post I’ll show an older car I’ve had for some years on the old layout that I decided to rework and weather, then keep in the fleet. This car I believe is an older Roundhouse model with a tie load. This car started out as shown below: First off, the tie load was… Continue reading

  • My Facebook page….

Just a quick note on my Facebook page! The page is the same name as the website: The Weathering Depot. I now have just under 2,200 followers and over 2,000 likes. If you’re online, please be sure to check it out! Continue reading

  • Recent work….

Sorry I haven’t posted here lately, as I’ve been busy with my eBay store, my Facebook page by the same name, and actually a new career that takes up quite a bit of my time! Recently I finished up a project that immediately sold on my eBay store, along with my ex-AN , now TASD… Continue reading

  • Details, part two…..

Again today I’m posting more details I’ve added to the modules since I last posted about these. Eventually as mentioned before, my goal is to make these modules look like a gritty, grimy industrial area you’d find on Penn Central in the seventies. Details definitely make a layout, as much as weathering and scenery. I… Continue reading
