The Weathering Depot

I have been weathering mainly HO Scale model trains since 2009 for fellow modelers and family. I specialize in freight cars, especially rust buckets. I do anything from light to heavy weathering using a variety of different mediums, sometimes three or four on a single car. I take care with models, therefore a model may take me a week plus. Please check out my work here on my page. My price varies as to how much weathering is requested. I will also for an extra labor and parts charge change out couplers and wheels. My fees and hours are on the "contact me" tab.

  • Another car finished….

The P&LE boxcar is now finished as well. This car was done by first spraying a light coat of green that matched the car to lighten the car a bit and take away some of the shine this Athearn car had out of the box. The next step was several brown color washes to dirty… Continue reading

  • Next project….

This car actually is finished as well, but for lack of time at the moment I’ll simply post a photo of this project car. This car as finished will also go up on my eBay store this weekend. Story will follow how I did this one: Continue reading

  • Finished….

The AN boxcar I was working on is now finished with a photo below plus a photo of the prototype: This one will go up on my eBay store this weekend! Continue reading

  • Another car for the fleet….

A recent car for my fleet was completed over the holiday break, this one an ExactRail 50’ PC&F single door boxcar lettered for Western Pacific. Shown below is the car new in box purchased off eBay: I decided to purchase and keep this car as the stencil on the side says when empty return to… Continue reading

  • Next project for eBay….

I’m almost finished with this Walther’s 50’ ACF boxcar lettered for Apalachicola Northern. I decided to make this a former AN car, now TASD 9118 which I had a photo of shown here, as well as the AN car new in box: I achieved the dirty orange color with rust and brown washes that had… Continue reading

  • Module update part 1….

Sorry for the lack of posting recently but I took a break during the holidays. Now back at it with these updates. I’ve been busy at work on the second module. First off, I ordered two pre-built and weathered Walther’s buildings, their McGraw Oil dealer to be used as a fuel and gasoline dealer, and… Continue reading

  • Recent addition to the fleet…

Here is a recent addition to my fleet, purchased off eBay. This car in my opinion is a nicely weathered car. Below are two photos: Continue reading

  • Another module added….

Back from taking a break, today I’m covering the addition of another small module. This module was the smallest module on my original layout, measuring 2ft wide by about 3 ft long. I didn’t have as much room as I thought between the first module and our closet so I had to turn the new… Continue reading

  • Another project finished…..

I’ve just completed another project, this one an Athearn Genesis “primed for grime” Golden West Service boxcar. This guy took about a week to complete. The car has the usual underside weathering plus several layers of weathering on the sides and ends. I used washes, powders, acrylic paint, and rust texture on this model. Photos… Continue reading

  • Coming soon….

Coming soon to the “new” layout is another module section I had from the old layout, a 2×2 ft extension. This small module section had the mainline from Dickinson yard coming through it, plus a siding into Electro-Met, a company in Alloy, WV. These tracks on the 2 ft module should connect with the current… Continue reading

  • Latest weathering for client….

I recently was given two HO scale cars to do for a local modeler. This client models modern day, which means plenty of rust and grime on an older boxcar and plenty of graffiti. The second car I was asked to weather is a Cargill hopper. This modeler requested plenty of grime and graffiti on… Continue reading

  • Quick project….

Here’s a quick little project I was able to do in one day, in between projects for clients. This Railbox car had been lightly weathered previously. This go round I simply applied a brown wash to the sides and while still wet, lightly dabbed some dirt colored powder onto the sides then evenly spread it… Continue reading

  • The module today….

Today I thought I’d share a few photos of the module as it looks today. Tomorrow I have a package of Bachmann maintenance crew coming to add to the same figures already placed in Allied Chemical. Photos are coming once these additional figures are added. In the meantime a few more weeds have been added… Continue reading

  • More weathering….

A bit more weathering done on the module the last few days. Not only did I paint and weather the first set of four tanks posted previously, but I also finally covered up the fake brown plastic base they sit on. What I did was paint the base with white glue, then applied dirt from… Continue reading

  • Details, details…..

Details definitely make a layout. Details set the tone and era for a layout. Details can create separate little scenes on a layout. That’s my intention with this module. It definitely isn’t much of a model railroad, but one must make do with what space you have. This past week I’ve been finding more details… Continue reading
