The Weathering Depot

I have been weathering mainly HO Scale model trains since 2009 for fellow modelers and family. I specialize in freight cars, especially rust buckets. I do anything from light to heavy weathering using a variety of different mediums, sometimes three or four on a single car. I take care with models, therefore a model may take me a week plus. Please check out my work here on my page. My price varies as to how much weathering is requested. I will also for an extra labor and parts charge change out couplers and wheels. My fees and hours are on the "contact me" tab.

  • Next up….

Next up after delivering two weathered Blackstone narrow gauge locomotives and five more HOn3 cars to a local modeler is reworking the weathering on these two covered hoppers I have for sale. Stay tuned for updates…. Continue reading

  • New addition….

I recently picked up this previously weathered model on eBay, as I wanted this particular railroad and the boxcar seemed to be fairly nicely weathered. Sometimes though looks are deceiving. Upon receiving the car I noticed in starting to tweak the weathering that I’d have to rework quite a bit on the car. This I… Continue reading

  • Side project today….

Now for sale on my eBay store. This is an HO scale Intermountain 3 bay hopper with upgraded weathering just completed today. Rust and rust spots added, a thin spray of dirt on the top to tone everything down, hatch brackets/latches rusted, and what I call “texture weathering “ applied to the underside. Enlarge the… Continue reading

  • Narrow gauge time….

It’s back to weathering some more narrow gauge equipment for a local modeler and friend, in this case, several Blackstone locomotives. On this first one, I’ve faded the black paint., rusted up the couplers, sprayed a light grey over the drivers and pilot to simulate road dust, highlighted the smokebox with some gun metal paint,… Continue reading

  • Layout photo of the week….

A bit late, as I’ve been busy weathering on several projects, but here’s this week’s photo from the old layout: Continue reading

  • Sometimes….

Sometimes you find a great catch online somewhere, in this case on eBay. Found this car for s great price and won the bid for this guy. I didn’t quite like the whitish appearance though it had streaked down the sides from the rusted top, so I addressed this with some rust powder. I also… Continue reading

  • Grimy and worn…..

Grimy and worn indeed, but still soldering on, doing the job the builder EMD intended. This model of Penn Central GP9 7466 is an Athearn Genesis model I sold this past year. The model was weathered using several different mediums. Below that is my GP7 model of number 5628 based at Buckeye yard in Columbus,… Continue reading

Here’s a link to a great catch on eBay that will be another weathering project soon, which is a Tangent 1965 B&O caboose: Continue reading

  • Evolution of a patched hopper…

Today I thought I’d write a short blog post showing a car I did perhaps a year and a half ago for another friend and local modeler. This is I believe a Tangent car. The hopper is an ex-PC then ConRail car, patched for RFMX. Obviously as shown the old Penn Central lettering is showing… Continue reading

  • Finished….!

This model is now finished after final decal work and sealing, here’s both sides of the car: Continue reading

  • Next up….

These projects are next up. One is a continuation of the 64 HOn3 cars to be weathered for a friend. In between work and family matters it takes a bit of time to fully weather a car including the trucks, wheels, and undersides! The other project is another Railbox boxcar. This one I think will… Continue reading
