The Weathering Depot

I have been weathering mainly HO Scale model trains since 2009 for fellow modelers and family. I specialize in freight cars, especially rust buckets. I do anything from light to heavy weathering using a variety of different mediums, sometimes three or four on a single car. I take care with models, therefore a model may take me a week plus. Please check out my work here on my page. My price varies as to how much weathering is requested. I will also for an extra labor and parts charge change out couplers and wheels. My fees and hours are on the "contact me" tab.

  • Switching Monsanto at night part 1….

Here we are on third trick last night as Jimmy, Charlie, and I are on 8806 switching out Monsanto along the Ohio River. Because of the area industry tracks loaded up, this job is going to take quite awhile, tis why this will get in two parts. First, GP7 5628 is bringing in three tank… Continue reading

  • Slow, slow,  slower….

Yep, it’s slow as molasses right now in the weathering game. Hopefully it’s the season or time of year when a lot of model railroaders are outside enjoying the weather or on vacation…. Continue reading

  • Signs are here….!

Here’s a project finally completed and installed! Scaled down and printed by a local FedEx store, these look great! Many thanks to FedEx 👍 Continue reading

  • Switching at dusk….

It’s dusk in Cincinnati along the Ohio River as we’re working several industries.  First up we watch the local crew from Riverside bring in one gondola for Sullivan scrap and an N&W insulated boxcar for Stephen’s Grocery.  This crew first shoves the boxcar down against us in 8806, then spots the gondola: Fred, Jimmy, and… Continue reading

  • Big news…..!

Join me on May 2nd as I’ll be on The Train Talk Media podcast with Chuck Geiger discussing my weathering and possibly the layout! Time TBA….. Continue reading

  • Here comes the local….

Today the local out of Riverside has brought us quite a few inbound cars. Looking at the waybills shows a gondola for Sullivan scrap, three tank cars for Monsanto Chemical, an Evergreen boxcar for the team track, and a WP boxcar of paints and stains for Armitage Furniture. Previously yesterday the local brought out a… Continue reading

  • Details, details….

A multitude of details is what imo makes a layout come to life. As in the real world, there are vehicles everywhere, signs everywhere, power poles and lines everywhere. Putting these and more details on a layout just adds more and more realism. Such is the case with my layout. Below are just a few… Continue reading

  • Is that oil….?

Yes, that’s oil residue from these PC locomotives sitting in an area constantly. Another little detail added today, using engine oil by AK with actual soot dabbed on top while wet to give a bit of oily greasy look to the spots! Continue reading

  • Switching the local industries…

Here we continue on first trick with the local area based locomotive NW2 8806 switching the inbound and outbound cars the local has brought out from Riverside yard. Today’s crew includes Charlie as engineer, Fred as conductor, and Jimmy as brakeman on 8806’s crew. Of course the local has the usual five man crew. The… Continue reading

  • The weathered old geep….

Just a short post today showing a bit of the weathering on my old standby,  GP7 5628. Unfortunately the photo doesn’t show the rust on the cab roof.  Looks like the old gal has been sideswiped at one time looking at that handrail stanchion! This locomotive is absolutely still my best locomotive,  almost twenty years… Continue reading

  • The railroads of Cincinnati….

Here today is a map of the railroads of Cincinnati circa 1952. Numerous railroads and their lines ran through and around the Queen City. The line I model runs along the lower left corner of the map, based out of Riverside yard in Sedamsville. A yard I actually ran into while track inspector was McCullough… Continue reading

  • The Penn Central system ….

I’m going to speak today about the PC system. A lot has been discussed about the Penn Central, good and bad. A lot of factors went into the reason and rhyme behind the merger that forged the PC. I won’t go into the history nor reasons for the downfall. What I will discuss is why… Continue reading
