Here’s another post about my time as a brakeman on the Indiana and Ohio railroad back in the day. On weekends I worked the tourist train the railroad then ran between the towns of Mason Ohio and Lebanon Ohio.
One weekend in particular was wet and miserable with steady rain all day with bouts of heavy rain. As anyone who knows railroading, the brakeman is the guy who gets down on the ground in all types of weather to do his work while the engineer stays dry!
This particular day we had a local news station on board with a female reporter and male cameraman. I myself came ready that day with a full length rain poncho with hood worn over my coveralls and cap. A bit of protection but still wet and miserable.
As I finished lining the switches on the runaround track in Lebanon so we could shove the train back across US RT 42 and into the station I came back through the rear car soaking wet with rain dripping off my poncho and hood when I hear the female reporter state “Oh you poor man you’re all wet!” An understatement to say the least! But, just another day out in the elements working the railroad…..!
