The Weathering Depot

I have been weathering mainly HO Scale model trains since 2009 for fellow modelers and family. I specialize in freight cars, especially rust buckets. I do anything from light to heavy weathering using a variety of different mediums, sometimes three or four on a single car. I take care with models, therefore a model may take me a week plus. Please check out my work here on my page. My price varies as to how much weathering is requested. I will also for an extra labor and parts charge change out couplers and wheels. My fees and hours are on the "contact me" tab.

Latest project…..

This morning I’ll post up some photos of my latest project. I have to laugh at myself because I must have been half asleep when I purchased this car new on eBay. I say that because I wanted and was looking for a C&NW covered hopper to weather up instead of this open hopper….lol.

Oh well! I’ll just make the best of this when I did receive this Walther’s hopper. First off I mixed two Vallejo paints together to get this lime green color on the car, as every photo I’ve ever seen of these cars they always fade to a lime green color. The car out of the box was a very dark green.

After over spraying the car, I carefully go back over the lettering immediately with a micro q-tip dipped in water and remove the paint over the lettering and logo. Next up I painted the inside of the bay with rust paint. Next up was to dirty up the underside. I first sprayed a dirt color acrylic over the bottom, then went back over with grimy black around the dump chutes and doors to simulate the coal buildup and dust. A light over spray of the frame sill with the same black was next.

Next step was adding all the rust spots with a liquid rust colored micro pen then dabbed with rust powder. Next up was to dullcoat the entire car. In the meantime, the trucks and wheels had been taken off and painted. After sealing, I applied a black wash to the inside bay and while still wet, dabbed on some black/grey powder to simulate more coal dust.

The last step was to apply the ACI plates from Atlas, and reattach the trucks and wheels after sealing them. The car is now finished and up on my eBay store! Photos below:
