The Weathering Depot

I have been weathering mainly HO Scale model trains since 2009 for fellow modelers and family. I specialize in freight cars, especially rust buckets. I do anything from light to heavy weathering using a variety of different mediums, sometimes three or four on a single car. I take care with models, therefore a model may take me a week plus. Please check out my work here on my page. My price varies as to how much weathering is requested. I will also for an extra labor and parts charge change out couplers and wheels. My fees and hours are on the "contact me" tab.

Recent project….

I’ve been busy with layout and commission work these many months , so here goes on some recent projects including one I just finished. This one is a Walther’s Mainline series C&NW 3 bay covered hopper.

First steps were to fade this olive green color as shown below but also show how the car looked out of the box:

Next I decided to tackle the roof. For the roof I used a brown wash as the base then dabbed on a lightly diluted rust texture and while wet, went over it with two different color rust pigments, then when dry coated it with pigment fixative. Photos show the results:

I also covered the hatch covers with dark earth pigment as well. Next up I started on the sides with the same rust texture dabbed on then somewhat brushed down then covered with the same two color rust pigments. I again went over the sides with pigment fixative:

Next came the ends after a seal coat. For the car ends I brushed on a diluted different rust texture, then coated while wet with a metal slag grey/ black pigment to get the dirt and grime effect, then added dark earth pigment along the frame sill. This step I also rusted the brake wheel and platform:

Next came the underside which I sprayed first with dark brown acrylic followed by a black grey color in spots. I then sealed the underside and the next day dabbed a brown wash over the area in spots and dabbed dark earth pigment over while wet, and when dry sealed again:

Finally, I painted the trucks and wheels, then sealed them. After a day of crying, I reattached the trucks and wheels and this guy is ready to go on eBay!
